Sagarmatha sees first deaths of 2021 expedition

KATHMANDU, May 12: Two foreign climbers have reportedly died during their expedition to Mount Sagarmatha on Wednesday.

KATHMANDU, May 12: Two foreign climbers have reportedly died during their expedition to Mount Sagarmatha on Wednesday. 


According to Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Director at Seven Summit Treks, a Kathmandu-based mountaineering company, Abdul Waraich from Switzerland and Puwei Liu from the United States of America breathed their last on Wednesday (May 12).

Waraich had successfully reached the summit but began experiencing health complications during his descent as he was suffering from exhaustion. He died near South Summit. The company said that it sent two Sherpas with oxygen and food but they could not save him.  


Similarly, Liu suffered from snow blindness and exhaustion while descending from Hillary Step. According to the company, he breathed his last at Camp IV (7900m- South Col) on Wednesday evening.
