KATHMANDU, Aug 30: The Kathmandu metropolis has handed a vehicle purchased for the management of street beggars to the Manav Sewa Ashram.

Metropolis mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya handed the vehicle's key to the Ashram chair Ramji Adhikari amid a programme at the City Hall today.

The mayor said the concept of building a smart city would not be realised until the complete management of street beggars was carried out. The KMC office has come up with various plans for building a 'smart city' under the public-private partnership concept, according to him. It presently operates the bus service in partnership with the Sajha and this year, provided 10 ambulances to the needy in support of several organisations.

Deputy mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi said the development was not an overnight phenomenon. She pledged allocation of budget to maintain the vehicle operating cost and the construction of a new building for the Ashram.

Organisation chair Adhikari said it had been collaborating with local governments to make the street free from unattended people. Those rescued from the street will be given shelter at the Ashram offices at Samakhusi, Budhanilkantha and in other places too.
