Rujata speaks about 'size zero'

KATHMANDU, July 7: “Eating is the key to size zero,” said Rujuta Diwakar, the eminent fitness professional from India whose foray into Bollywood happened through her revolutionary “Eat, yet lose” mantra.

Yes, she’s the same person behind Kareena Kapoor’s eyes-widening size-zero transformation in the movie “Tashaan.”[break]

A clientele list that boasts the who’s who of media fraternity, from Anil Ambani, Saif Ali Khan, Konkana Sen to Preity Zinta, Diwakar’s books “Women and the Weight Loss Tamasha” and “Don’t Lose Your Mind, Lose Your Weight” are among the bestsellers in India.

Below are some gems of Rujuta’s proven conviction on sizes:

Nine-to-five job? Not me

The nine-to-five job routine never really appealed to me. I wanted to do something that gave me flexibility, to have my own freedom. And this was a field that never failed to amuse me.

It was around 1999 that Sports Science and Nutrition was introduced in India for the first time; otherwise we had to go abroad. Being born and raised in a middle-class family, I couldn’t have afforded it anyway. So I’m grateful that whatever I wanted to study was right there in Mumbai.

Drawing a line

Well, size zero is just something that people have labeled it. It’s not something one should struggle to achieve. Sure, it’s a good thing that people are conscious of their health, and they are eating right. But you draw a line when you start going a bit abroad with it. It’s too much when you have this conception that looking slim and trim is what makes you great, and even a slight budge out of your shape will make you ugly. There’s a line. Your life shouldn’t be defined by all these shapes, sizes or even colors.

Trendy, or healthy?

It’s something “in” right now. So it’s a trend, and trends keep on changing. But the important thing is what you do to your body, how you treat it. Just like you have rituals and prayers in a temple, your body is a sacred place. You need to treat it like one. Starving it, denying it of its craving is wrong. As long as you’re eating right and working right, I don’t think it matters so significantly. And it’s not written anywhere that size zero means being unhealthy.

Too busy to eat

The funny thing is that all those busy people have everything managed—their appointments, their schedules, their timetables. Then I wonder, why can’t they do the same for their food? Food isn’t something you should be frivolous with.

And one should always eat out of responsibility. Food makes your mind strong, and it helps your body become strong. So, all you busy people, make your food and exercise schedules.

Discipline

I don’t have an exact answer, but what I can say is that it takes some discipline, some sense of responsibility for you to carry it out. Whether you’ll continue it for the rest of your life is up to you; but it isn’t something you do for a month and then discontinue it. Don’t interpret the word “diet” in a wrong way. It never meant starving yourself. It means to eat, but appropriately. So I guess people can do that much for the rest of their lives.

Too few dieticians?

Not at all. What I think is that Nepali women carry wisdom with them. They have this oral tradition of great grandmother telling her daughter, and the daughter telling her daughter the secrets in the kitchen. In fact, if you listen to your mother and eat as she tells you to, you won’t need any dietician. Maybe that’s why the family structure is so successful.

Starve to slim

That’s just a way to torture yourself. Not eating will decrease your metabolism rate and make you weaker. No girl looks good while she’s starving herself. Your face doesn’t glow, you look weak, and you even get cranky. Don’t make such desperate decisions for nothing. It’s well documented that “fasting and feasting” is the worst thing you can do to your body. That makes your body more unstable. All you need to do is eat small proportions every two hours. And of course, exercise.

Another misconception to be cleared is that exercise doesn’t mean gym-ing and heavy workouts. Do what you enjoy. Dance, if you like; jog, if you want to; or even walk. Treat your body right, and it’ll definitely pay you back.
