KHOTANG, Nov 17: The District Children Welfare Committee(CWC), Khotang handed over five thousand rupees to the family of Talkumari Rai as financial support to care for her children.

Rai, who was a resident of Dhitun-6 in the district, lost her life while undergoing abortion to terminate her three months’ pregnancy. She died reportedly due to the error on part of the health workers involved in the abortion.

Rai became seriously ill after undergoing curettage of her uterus following her abortion at the District Hospital in the district headquarters Diktel and died on September 4.

“The Children Welfare Committee provided financial support to help her five daughters and two sons,” said Goma Prasai, officer at CWC.

According to the medical officer at the District Hospital, Santosh Prasad Shahi, Rai was taken severely ill and exhibited symptoms of abdominal distension, respiratory problems, vomiting, nausea and bleeding from nose. She died on the way to Kathmandu for further treatment. She was admitted to the hospital on August 31 for abortion.

Health workers rejected allegation by Rai’s family that she died due to the wounds caused by surgical devices during the abortion procedure.

The children are currently under the care of their father.
