“He hopes to see early establishment of an inclusive government through consensus and compromise,” a spokesperson for Ban said in a statement issued in New York on Monday.

Reaffirming the United Nations´ continued support, Ban also called on the parties to regain the spirit of consensus and cooperation needed to bring sustainable peace to Nepal and to carry out all outstanding commitments without delay.

Give priority to peace, statute: Embassies

Embassies of the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States have urged all political parties to give high priority to constitution drafting and the peace process in the extended three-month term of the Constituent Assembly.

"With the agreement to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly for a further three months we hope the new government and the opposition parties will now give high priority to issuing a draft of a new constitution, which commits Nepal to democracy and upholding its citizens´ fundamental rights and freedoms in line with Nepal´s international obligations," Embassy of Denmark, local president of the EU, said in a statement on behalf of the embassies.

Urging all the parties to acknowledge the urgency of showing flexibility, mutual respect and careful forethought, the embassies further said, "We also urge the government and the opposition parties to ensure that the integration and rehabilitation of the former Maoist combatants are brought to a successful conclusion."

The embassies have also reaffirmed their continued commitment and full support to the peace process and said they stand ready to assist Nepal in the weeks and months ahead.
