KATHMANDU, May 8: Meteorologists have projected rains across the country on the day of local level elections and have urged all stakeholders concerned to make necessary preparations.

According to meteorologists, a low pressure system that was developed from Uttar Pradesh to the plains of West Bengal in India since May 6 has changed into a sea storm on Sunday and its influence will be felt in Nepal as well.

Climate expert Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti said that the storm, named as Asani, was moving at a very fast pace and the impact of the storm will be felt in the coastal areas of India including Orissa in most parts of Nepal from May 11. In Particular, this will cause rainfall in eastern Nepal due to the low pressure conditions developed in the Bay of Bengal during the polling day.

“The rainfall will have an adverse impact during the local level election. People who will visit polling centers to cast their votes can get wet. So, I suggest the authorities concerned make necessary preparations in advance,” Dr Upreti said. “No matter whether it may cause rainfall or not in some place, we need to stay cautious to ensure security of ballot boxes at the polling stations,”
