KATHMANDU, July 9; The state-owned land can now be leased out for up to 40 years, with the government imposing a new rule that has come into effect from Friday.

By publishing ‘Work Policy on Registration, Use and Lease of Government Land 2022’ in Nepal Gazette, the government has come up with three types of provisions for leasing out the public land. According to the new rule, the land can be leased out for a maximum of five years under the short term provision. For the medium term, the tenure will be 15 years while it will be for 40 years maximum for a long term plan.

To rent the public land, international organizations need to take approval of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while the domestic firms need to take approval of the local governments. The firms concerned should not breach norms of historical, archeological, religious and cultural importance of the leased out lands.
