MORANG, March 14: A provincial assembly meeting of Province 1 has been deferred until further notice, the provincial assembly secretariat said on Sunday.
Issuing a notice today, the provincial assembly secretariat said that the fourth meeting of the winter session of the provincial assembly that was called for Monday had been postponed until further notice owing to special reasons.
Earlier, provincial assembly Speaker Pradeep Kumar Bhandari called the provincial assembly meeting for 12PM, March 15 with the consent of Chief Minister Sher Dhan Rai.
On February 21, a vote of no-confidence motion was filed against the chief minister in the absence of the government side.
Ruling CPN (UML)'s Chief Whip Buddhi Kumar Rajbhandari has been insisting on the withdrawal of the no-confidence motion registered against Chief Minister Rai or its annulment by provincial assembly Speaker Bhandari.
A total of 37 provincial assembly members filed the no-confidence motion against CM Rai. However, five of the provincial assembly members backtracked and decided to support Rai.
Of the 91-member provincial assembly, the erstwhile Nepal Communist Party had 67 provincial assembly members. Currently, the CPN (UML) has 51 provincial assembly members, out of which, 30 belong to the KP Oli-led faction while the Madhav Kumar led-faction has 19 lawmakers.
A lawmaker currently serves as the Speaker while another provincial assembly member of the CPN (UML) has been absconding after he was accused of forgery. The Dahal-led CPN (Maoist Center) has 16 provincial assembly members.
