Proposal for embankment to curb threats of Indrawati and Sunkoshi

The proposal follows the completion of technical measurements, inspections, and cost estimation as directed by the provincial ministry last year.

KATHMANDU, Jan 18:  The Water Resources and Irrigation Development Division Office in Kavrepalanchok has initiated a proposal to construct an embankment in Dolalghat to protect the popular tourist spot from floods caused by the confluence of the Sunkoshi and Indrawati rivers. This step comes in response to the instructions from the Ministry of Drinking Water, Energy, and Irrigation during this fiscal year.

The proposal follows the completion of technical measurements, inspections, and cost estimation as directed by the provincial ministry last year. Binay Paudel, head of the division, said that the plan aims to safeguard the Dolalghat market and bridge. The embankment will be constructed under a federal grant.

The Dolalghat area has been frequently affected by floods, particularly the devastating floods in June 2021 and September 2024, which damaged settlements. Local residents have long demanded the construction of an embankment to protect the area, including the Dolalghat market and bridge, critical for connecting to other districts and the northern border.

Federal lawmaker Gokul Prasad Baskota said that the project would be discussed to ensure the safety of Dolalghat. In the past, floods from the Indrawati and Sunkoshi rivers have swept away homes and infrastructures. A previous recommendation to build embankments was advanced last year by the District Disaster Management Committee to curb such risks.
