CHITWAN, Oct 13: The prison authority in Chitwan is facing a serious problem as it is forced to accommodate three times more prisoners than its actual capacity.
The prisoners are forced to spend their nights under Tarpaulin as the prison management is finding it hard to manage the overwhelming number of inmates.
As many as 12 prisoners are forced to spend their night under Tarpaulin at present. There are 778 prisoners in this jail even as the prison has capacity to accomodate 280 prisoners.

Kamal Prasad Acharya, Head of the prison office, said that they are facing problems managing prisoners especially during night. "The current problem in the prison is that when there are more prisoners, they have to stay under the tarpaulin," he said.
Acharya stated that the Department of Prison Management has been informed about the problem they are facing now. He added, "We have given all the information to the Department. But it is the same problem everywhere,” he said.
“After the increase in the number of prisoners, we transferred some prisoners in August. The pressure has started to rise again,” he further said.
According to Acharya, a total of 51 people were transferred in the month of August due to the increased number of inmates. He said that even at the time of transfer, he was transferred because he had to live under tarpaulin and the same problem exists even today.
There are 59 people in the women's prison that has a capacity of 25 women. Similarly, 729 males are kept in the prison that has capacity to accomodate 255 male prisoners. Acharya said that four minors are also in the prison now.
Acharya said that the number of prisoners is increasing day by day as prisoners are being brought to the jail from neighboring districts as well. A large number of prisoners are brought to the jail, mainly from Nawalpur and Makwanpur districts.
