Urges developers to build affordable housing units

KATHMANDU, April 7: President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has underscored the need to consider geological factors while designing mega structures.

Inaugurating the 6th Property Expo in Kathmandu on Friday, she urged property developers to build affordable housing units so that it benefits larger section of the society. “At present, only businessmen and well-off people can afford apartments and housing units. Affordability has to be considered while building housing units,” she said, adding that the government would do the needful to make housing units and apartments affordable for general public.

Stating that many countries have started building smart and green cities, former prime minister K P Sharma Oli urged property developers to put low pressure on environment while developing property. “The United Nations (UN) has said that every citizen should get access to healthy residence by 2030. The development of housing and apartment is good sign for the country as it can help in the economic growth,” he added.

Icchya Raj Tamang, the president of Nepal Land and Housing Developers Association (NLHDA), said property developers have launched attractive schemes to make apartments and housing units accessible to general public.

The four-day expo is being jointly organized by NLHDA, Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, and Kathmandu Valley Development Authority.

According to the organizers, the expo will provide information about the current situation and future prospects of land and housing business in Nepal as well as the problems and challenges facing this business. They also said that the expo will also help to give momentum to land and housing business.

Different engineering and architecture consultants, banks and insurance companies are also providing their services at the expo.
