KATHMANDU, July 16: The Press Council Nepal has given 24 hours to furnish a clarification from Ajaya Babu Shiwakoti for publishing a news report against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Hamrakura.com.

The Council on Wednesday sent a letter to Shiwakoti, editor-in-chief of Hamrakura.com, seeking clarifications for publishing a news report claiming Prime Minister Oli has USD 5.5 million stashed away in a Swiss Bank. The news report also claimed that PM Oli has investments in a telecom company in Cambodia.

Talking to Republica, Shiwakoti said that the news piece was a translated version of a piece published in Global Watch Analysis. "We [Hamrakura.com] didn’t write the piece. As the news piece was published in international media, we just wanted the people in Nepal to know about the incident. We have clearly hyperlinked the original link of Global Watch Analysis in the news piece," Shiwakoti told Republica.

Shiwakoti has already replied to the Press Council, arguing that Hamrakura.com doesn’t own rights to the news. "The piece published in Global Watch Analysis was shared heavily abroad," said Shiwakoti.

"There was no ill-intention. After the press advisor to PM Oli, Surya Thapa, objected to the news piece, we published a news report," he said.

The news piece was published in Hamrakura.com on Tuesday.
