KATHMANDU, Aug 29: The 12th Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) kicked off in the capital today.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari inaugurated the conference amid a function. The conference will run for five days.
Two hundred and fifty scout delegates from 26 countries of the Asia and Pacific region are attending the conference taking place for the first time in Nepal.
On the occasion, President Bhandari stressed that the government should play a special role in the task of making the youths knowledgeable and adept in practical skills while making the scouting in the country people-oriented.
She expressed best wishes for the success of the scout towards increasing the women's notable participation and enhancing their capacity in the scouting activities.
The Head of State praised the role played by Nepal Scouts in the holistic development of children, teenagers and youths as well as in preparing dutiful citizens dedicated to the country through the education campaign in over the more than six decades' time since the start of scouting in the country.
Thanking the Nepal Scouts and the International Scouts for the support extended at times of natural disasters including the destructive earthquake of 2015, President Bhandari pointed out the need of the government bodies concerned to work towards fostering cooperation and coordination in making the welfare role of the scouts more vibrant in the context of the country moving ahead to the reconstruction phase now.
The President also expressed the belief that the Nepal Scouts would gear itself ahead towards making its policies and programs people-oriented in keeping with the spirit and aspirations of the Nepali people for prosperity and progress as the country is in the constitution implementation phase.
Minister for Youth and Sports Daljit Shreepaili, dwelling on the contribution made by the scouting activities on increasing the capacity and in the social service sector in the country, shared that scouts curriculum would be started from the school level itself taking into account the significance and the role of scouting services. He added that the scouts would be mobilized in a more proactive manner in disaster management activities.
Chief of WAGGGS' Asia Pacific Region, Loli Jang said that some 3.5 million volunteers from the World Scouts were providing service in leadership development and capacity building along with promoting unity and diversity.
Chief Commissioner of Nepal Scouts Rabin Dahal maintained that scouting activities were contributing to making the youth generation capable and dutiful.
According to Nepal Scouts National Secretary Lok Bahadur Bhandari such conferences are held every three years.
Workshops on women leadership and capacity building, disaster management and women empowerment would be held in course of the conference.
The emblem of the conference is 'Hamro Danphe'. The theme of the conference is - Connecting the World and Having an Impact on Productivity.
Bhandari said the conference will elect the four-member new working committee of WAGGGS' Asia Pacific Region, including the President.
The organizer, Nepal Scouts, has stated that the conference has been organized in Kathmandu with the objective of increasing the participation of scouts in the ascent of the Mount Baden Powell, situated at Urkema in Rasuwa. The mountain has been named after the founder of the world scouting movement, Sir Baden Powell. It is hoped the event will also promote scout tourism in Nepal. RSS
