KATHMANDU, Jan 28: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has urged Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to hold local elections as per the provisions of the constitution and relevant laws.

Prime Minister Deuba had reached Shital Niwas on Thursday to call on President Bhandari. During the meeting, President Bhandari drew the attention of Prime Minister Deuba to hold elections at all levels including local elections as per the spirit of the constitution.

Pointing out that the constitution does not envisage a government without the people's representatives at all three levels, President Bhandari said that she is confident that the government will act in accordance with the constitution and law.

Recalling that the arrangements for elections made in the past after the expiration of the term of elected representatives left the country without the people's representatives, she urged the prime minister to fix the date of local elections within the limits of the constitution and law.

In response, Prime Minister Deuba said that the issue would be resolved soon after holding consultation with political parties. Expressing his commitment that the government cannot and will not go beyond the constitution and law, Prime Minister Deuba said that elections at all levels would be held on time in line with the spirit of the constitution and law.

Prime Minister Deuba also briefed the president on the initiatives taken by the government to end the stalemate in parliament and the progress made so far.
