Premier sets up final clash against Prime

KATHMANDU, April 11: Premier College set up final clash against defending champion Prime Sports Club in the Moti Devi Shrestha Memorial cup, the second NECOS nation-wide open women´s basketball tournament.



Prime pulled a 54-24 victory over TIA Club on Wednesday in the first semifinal of the tournament. Prime dominated TIA in all the four quarters and pulled the huge margin victory at the court of the National Sports Council covered-hall, Tripureshwar, Kathmandu. [break]



Prime scored 12 points against the 9 points scored by TIA in the first quarter. In the second quarter, TIA added just two points while Prime added 19. Prime scored 15 points in the third quarter while TIA added only two points. In the last quarter, TIA scored eight points but Prime added 11 points to secure easy victory.



Gyanu Gauchan was the highest scorer for Prime with 14 points.



In the second semifinal, Premier thrashed Sunsari 52-20 as Mrinalini Shrestha scored 15 points for the winning side. Premier took the lead in the first quarter as it scored 17 points against 10 points scored by Sunsari. Premier kept the momentum and dominated all the remaining quarters with the scores of 17-3, 10-2 and 8-5 respectively.



The final and the third place play-off matches of the tournament, organized by Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS), will be played on Thursday.



Joshi elected chess president



The general assembly of Nepal Chess Association (NCA) has elected Rajesh Hari Joshi as its executive committee president for the second time on Wednesday. Joshi was president in the previous committee also.



The general assembly held in Dhulikhel elected Joshi. Santesh Man Pradhan has been elected co-president of the new committee.



Eka Lal Shrestha is the general secretary of the new committee, while Hera Kaji Maharjan has been elected secretary. Krishna Shrestha and Gyanendra Parajuli have been elected treasurer and co-treasurer respectively.



The general assembly also elected nine members. The NCA also has a provision of nominating three vice-presidents, seven members and two National Sports Council representatives in the executive committee.


Army reaches final



Defending champion Nepal Army reached the final of the Fourth Nakhipot Nation-wide Open Men´s Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday as it pulled fourth consecutive victory in the round-robin league of the tournament.



Nepal Army defeated Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center 28-26, 25-16, 25-13 on Wednesday. Army still has a match in hand in the league round.



Meanwhile, Dhorpatan Sports Training Center defeated Kavre Volleyball Club 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 in the second match of Wednesday.



Junior taekwondo championship



Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS) announced it will organize the First NECOS Junior National Taekwondo Championship next week. According to NECOS, the tournament will feature five events each in girls and boys´ section and five more poomse events.



Altogether 325 players from 63 districts are participating in the tournament that kicks off on April 17 and ends on April 19. The tournament will be held in the National Sports Council Covered-hall.



Parsa, Kailali relegated



Parsa and Kailali district have been relegated to B division as their respective district champions Diamond Youth Club and Bijay Sports Club finished on the bottom of the Red Bull A Division Relegation Football League.



Diamond Youth Club and Bijay Sports Club settled for a goalless draw on Wednesday in the relegation league at Ramnagar ground in Rupandehi.



Another match of the day between NFC, Chitwan and Saubhagya Youth Club, Rupandehi ended in a 1-1 draw and the result helped the respective districts to remain in the A division for the next season.



The tournament featured bottom four teams of the Red Bull A Division Regional League -- two teams each from group A and B -- held a few months ago.



The tournament relegated two A division football districts to B division. Teams finishing third and fourth are relegated to B division.



Shakti FM in Media Cup final



Shakti FM set up a final clash against Journalists´ Rights Forum in the NSJF Media Cup, seven-A-side football tournament organized by Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF) Makawanpur Coordination Committee in Hetauda.



Journalists´ Rights Forum defeated Radio Thaha Sanchar 1-0 on Wednesday in the first semifinal as Santosh Manandhar scored the lone goal of the match.



Meanwhile, Shakti FM edged past Radio Makawanpur 2-0 in tiebreaker. Amul Lama and Bibek Shrestha scored for Shakti FM in the tiebreaker.



The final match will be played on Thursday.
