KATHMANDU, Sept 29: Police have stepped up preparations to arrest CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet.
Although an arrest was planned on Sunday evening, it was postponed due to unfavorable circumstances, according to a police source. The preparation follows a cybercrime complaint filed against Basnet.

Januka Pathak (Shobha) filed a complaint with the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), alleging that Basnet defamed her on social media. Acting on this complaint, police began preparing for his arrest. Earlier, the police had written to the Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office, suggesting that further investigation into the complaint was unnecessary and recommending that the case be shelved.
The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office, however, instructed Basnet to clarify the context and purpose of a Facebook post in which he wrote, “A bear is recently roaming around Nepal’s politics, creating chaos everywhere,” using the word “bear” in a disparaging manner without specifying whom it referred to. Basnet himself has learned of the arrest preparations. The Home Ministry has reportedly been monitoring his activities for several days.
