KATHMANDU, April 20: Police arrested absconding gangster Rajiv Gurung aka Dipak Manange from the Swayambhu area in the capital on Thursday.

According to Metropolitan Police Range Office Kathmandu, Gurung was arrested as per the verdict of the then Appellate Court Patan, which had slapped a five-year jail term on him for involvement in ripping apart the right hand of another gangster, Chakre Milan, some 13 years ago.

A case of attempted murder was filed against Gurung at Kathmandu District Court shortly after the incident. The Supreme Court recently upheld the verdict issued by the appellate court [present day High Court].

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohan Kumar Thapa, Gurung was found in hiding at Swayambhu, Teendhara area at about 7 pm, Thursday. He was then arrested.

Gurung was elected a member of Province 4 provincial assembly from Manang in the recent elections as an independent candidate. However, he has not taken the oath of office and secrecy as he has been absconding ever since the apex court upheld the appellate court verdict in response to a review petition.

Earlier, police had issued a red corner notice against Gurung through the Interpol office at Nepal Police Headquarters. Police mobilized a special team to arrest him whether within or outside the country.
