PARIS, June 25: Poland became the first team to reach the European Championship quarterfinals by beating Switzerland 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

Grzegorz Krychowiak scored Poland's winning penalty shortly after Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka missed wide on his team's second shot.

During regulation time, Jakub Blaszczykowski gave Poland the lead in the 39th minute when he sent a low shot between the legs of Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Xherden Shaqiri equalized with a bicycle kick in the 82nd, jumping with his back to the net before sending a left-footed shot inside the post from near the edge of the area.

In extra time, substitute Eren Derdiyok came close to scoring for the Swiss in the 113th when his header was knocked wide by Poland goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
