KATHMANDU, Nov 12: Students affiliated with the Nepal Student Union (NSU) have burnt the effigy of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in different parts of the country on Monday, demanding the immediate release of their colleague Krishna Dhakal.

The NSU cadres staged demonstration and burnt effigy of Prime Minister Oli in front of Bishwabhasa Campus in the capital on Monday.

Dhakal, the president of NSU Kavre Unit, was detained by the Kavre District Police on Saturday for posting a distorted photo of Prime Minister Oli on social media. The 12th grader had immediately deleted the distorted photo from his Facebook wall.

Dhakal was handed over to Kathmandu District Police for further investigation. Dhakal will be into the custody for additional five days as per the Electronic Transaction Act, according to police.

As part of their protest, the NSU cadres launched an educational strike in Kavre on Sunday and Monday.
