PM furnishes clarification to SC

By
KATHMANDU, May 31: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai in his reply to the Supreme Court on Thursday said the contempt of court charge against him was meaningless.

PM Bhattarai, who reached the apex court at 2:30 in the afternoon with a seven-page written clarification, stated that the government has always honored the independence of the judiciary and urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the charge. [break]"I request the court to dismiss the contempt of court charge against me," PM said in his response. He claimed that he announced fresh elections to the Constituent Assembly (CA) as per the court´s verdict.

The Supreme Court, acting on the petition lodged by advocate Komal Prasad Etani, had last Thursday enjoined Prime Minister Bhattarai and Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Sitaula, to appear in person before the court within a week along with written clarification over the government´s move to register CA extension bill at parliament secretariat.

Sitaula also furnished his written clarification on Thursday and urged the SC to dismiss the petition.
