PM expresses grief over tragic death of Nirakar Pandey in Cambodia hotel fire

Govt bodies concerned instructed to bring the body as soon as possible

KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has extended heartfelt condolences to Nirakar Pandey, a Nepali national who died after jumping off the 12th floor of a hotel in Cambodia to save himself from fire.


According to his Personal Secretariat, Prime Minister Dahal expressed deep sorrow over the death of 19 people including Pandey due to fire in Cambodia on Thursday night.

Dahal has also expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased Pandey, who hails from Birtamod Municipality-1 in Jhapa district.


Prime Minister Dahal has instructed the Chief Secretary Shankar Bairagi to mobilize the relevant agencies to facilitate bringing his body to Nepal as soon as possible, according to the PM’s Persona Secretariat.


Pandey, who had gone to Cambodia on a vacation, jumped off the 12th floor of Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino in Poipet after the building caught fire. He died in the incident but a video message he sent to his son back in Nepal minutes before jumping off the 18-story building has gone viral in social media in Nepal.   


Pandey jumped off the building in an apparent bid to save himself from the fire. Before the jump, he had a one-and-a-half-hour video chat on Viber with various members of his family in Jhapa after he lost the hope of survival.
