KATHMANDU, Oct 1: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal today said the need for formulating a policy to channelize the skills and experiences of the elderly citizens for the country's development has remained as a burning issue.

In a message to mark the occasion of International Day of Older Persons, PM Dahal stated that the government was committed to creating an environment to allow elderly citizens to lead a respectful life.

He also appealed to all the classes and sectors to keep the time immemorial tradition of respecting and admiring the elderly inviolate. The family, society and the state including all of us must imitate the guidelines set by the elders, he added.

PM Dahal said the state must provide the sense of social security to the elderly people who have continued to contribute to the country in one way or the other by using their energetic time. He also noted the provision enshrined in Nepal's Constitution guaranteeing special reservation and social security right for the elderly citizens as fundamental rights.

He also extended wishes to all the mothers and fathers of the country who have gained knowledge, skills and experiences by facing many ups and downs in their life.

The United Nations on December 14, 1990 took the decision to mark October 1 as the International Senior Citizens Day. There are more than 2.5 million elderly citizens in the country. RSS
