SURKHET, May 25: The federal government has announced plans to construct a provincial airport in Surkhet and connect Humla with the national road network of the country for the upcoming fiscal year.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari presented the government’s policies and programs for the fiscal year 2022/23 in yesterday’s joint session of the Federal Parliament wherein she announced plans to begin the construction of a provincial airport in Bheriganga Municipality of Surkhet.

While there already exists an airport in Birendranagar Municipality of Surkhet district, big airplanes do not land at the airport which is why travelers are compelled to pay expensive fares for traveling from Surkhet to Kathmandu.

The policies and programs, announced yesterday, also mention linking the mountainous district of Humla to the national road network of the country. An 8 km road track needs to be opened in the Salisalla road section of the Karnali Corridor to link Simikot, the headquarters of Humla, with the national road network. The government has given the task of opening the road track to the Nepali Army. If this 8km-long road track is opened, the roadway would lead to the Nepal-China border.

The policies and programs also mention plans for finalizing the construction of the headworks and the powerhouse of the Bheri Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project in the upcoming fiscal year. Likewise, the policies and programs also specify arrangements for upgrading the Karnali Corridor.
