KATHMANDU, September 21: Over 300 participants took part in the 2024 People’s Climate March in Kathmandu on Saturday. The march saw a diverse group of participants, including youths, civil society organizations, farmers, women’s groups, persons with disabilities, marginalized, and indigenous communities. Together, they called for the Global North to provide $5 trillion annually in climate finance to the Global South.

The event was supported by 24 civil society organizations and networks from Nepal. The march began at Jawalakhel at 8:30 am, passed through Damkal Chowk and Lalitpur Mahanagar Parisar, and concluded at Pimbahal Pokhari around 10:00 am.

The march was marked by vibrant banners, powerful placards, and rhythmic chants set to the beats of traditional Newari musical instruments. Upon reaching Pimbahal Pokhari, the event concluded with a youth flash mob. Speakers including Ojaswee Amagain from Climates Nepal, Susmita Baidawar from the Digo Bikas Institute, and Min Bahadur Shahi from Human Rights Alliance emphasized the need for climate justice for the Global South.

“It is the moral and legal obligation of Global North governments to contribute $5 trillion annually as part of their climate debt,” they stated. This demand is part of the larger #PayUp campaign, which calls for a new climate finance goal that reflects the estimated $5 trillion owed each year to the Global South. The People’s Climate March 2024 is part of a global movement pushing for social, economic, and political transformations necessary to address the ongoing climate crisis.
