KATHMANDU, May 7: Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has said Nepal's national security has reached the advanced level.

Addressing the 17th anniversary function of the National Security Council Secretariat here today, the Prime Minister said the country has at present reached an advanced stage in terms of the overall security and national self-esteem, even at the citizen's level.

He said the kind of public perception and mentality on issues such as national security and development were important, asserting that our security organs have made a significant contribution to enhancing the security and national self-esteem.

Stating that it was first necessary to instill among the people a sense of nationality in order to strengthen the national security, PM Oli said the people are the strongest citadel of national security, and the people need to be determined on the stance of national interests and sovereignty, and of territorial indivisibility and national pride.

"Activities like undermining the national security and disturbing the internal law and order, which are not in Nepal's interest, are taking place knowingly or unknowingly whatever the motive," the Prime Minister said, adding that seditious criminal and uncalled for activities challenging even the national integrity have been seen in the country.

He directed the Security Council Secretariat to carry out works being alert and conscious towards what he called elements that can sometimes incite the people and create disturbances and agitation in the name of the people or in the form of spontaneous dissatisfaction or in the pretext of being marginalised in course of history for various reasons and on the back of the foundation of inequalities from the past. The PM suggested the Secretariat carry out works with the understanding that security means the security of the territory and people.

"Our country is in a state of fearlessness and it will remain so. Our territory would not be encroached upon and we would not be intimidated nor will we allow this to happen," he asserted.

Expressing the commitment to consolidating the national security from the policy, attitude and effort aspects, the Prime Minister pledged to work keeping the economic, social and environmental aspects in mind while advancing the topic of national security.

"Nepal is in a position to feel proud as it has not accepted servitude of anyone, not become dependent on others and not accepted colonialism," PM Oli said and expressed the determination that Nepal would always maintain this glorious tradition of not accepting the servitude and of not being defeated.

Defence Minister and member of the National Security Council, Ishwar Pokharel said that the Ministry was pursuing works on revising the national security policy and the national defense policy, on the formulation of the National Security Council Act and strengthening of the Council Secretariat with high priority.

Member-secretary of the Security Council Secretariat and Defence Ministry secretary Bishnu Prasad Lamsal underscored the need of strengthening the Secretariat as per the letter and spirit of the constitution.

The National Security Council has the constitutional mandate of formulating policy with regard to the wider national interest, security and defense and to recommend to the government on the mobilization and control of the Nepal Army.

The NSC Secretariat was established on March 11, 2002. Article 266 of the Constitution of Nepal has provisioned for the constitution of the National Security Council. RSS
