RAUTAHAT, Sept 3:  The election fever has already gripped the leaders and cadres of various political parties in Rautahat while the candidates are yet to be finalized.

With just fourteen days left for the local elections, parties are struggling to select the candidates to contest for various posts.   However, cadres affiliated to various political parties have begun their poll campaigns carrying party flags and other promotional tools. By organizing mass meetings, they are trying their best to woo the voters through their speeches. Even the vehicles used by the cadres and leaders are decorated with colorful flowers, pamphlets and banners.

Major political parties in Rautahat like Nepali Congress (NC), CPN (Maoist-Centre), Federal Socialist Forum Nepal (FSFN), Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) among others are still in confusion over selecting the candidates. But that has not stopped the cadres and leaders from engaging in the poll activities.

These days, the talks of elections have become very much common in every tea stall, shop and cross roads across the district. Locals are holding discussions on whom to elect and on what basis. Some have even started speculating the winners and losers.

According to Dharmendra Patel, district coordinator of FSFN, the party has finalized candidates in 11 local units but is yet to choose candidates in seven more local units. He further informed that at this point of time political leaders are not promoting candidates but their own parties.

After boycotting elections for months, RJPN finally agreed to take part in the third phase of local elections. But it has finalized candidates in none of the local units. As informed by the party's District Coordinator Shekh Jamshaid, it has been difficult for the party to choose candidates as the number of aspirants competing for various posts are high this time.

It is not possible for them to choose all the aspirants so the leaders are worried that their decision might hurt a lot of people. Jamshaid claimed that RJPN will be fixing candidates in all local units on the same date.

The enthusiasm seen among the locals has further added excitement to the election fervor in the district. People are eagerly waiting to cast votes in the historic election which has been announced after a hiatus of twenty years. “This historic election has been more like a festival for the people,” said Manoj Kumar Chaudhary, a civil society leader.
