Parliamentary panel urges National Women Commission to deliver effectively

KATHMANDU, July 19: Women and Social Committee, House of Representatives has directed the National Women Commission (NWC) to deliver its duties more effectively to serve the needs of violence survivors.

KATHMANDU, July 19: Women and Social Committee, House of Representatives has directed the National Women Commission (NWC) to deliver its duties more effectively to serve the needs of violence survivors. 


According to the Committee’s President Niru Devi Pal, the meeting held on Tuesday instructed the NWC to focus on the promotion of overall interests of women and deliver its duties effectively. 


The meeting concluded that the NWC with the constitutional recognition has not been able to connect and coordinate with other bodies working for the rights of women. The parliamentary panel urged NWC to ensure effective collaboration and take integrated efforts to meet its objectives and goals.

The goals of the NWC are to eliminate all sorts of violence against women and ensure social, economic and political empowerment of women through their meaningful inclusive and proportional representation in all sectors and levels of government and non-government bodies and faciliate effective enforcement of national and international legal instruments relating to the rights of women. 


Lawmakers Narayan Prasad Khatiwada, Bimala Nepali, Ganga Chaudhary, Amrita Thapa, Krishna Bahadur Rai said the presence of NWC is more important than other constitutional bodies due to its  relevance  and urged it to  work efficiently and in a planned way. 


During the meeting, NWC Chairperson Kamala Kumari Parajuli shared that 1,464 cases of women violence were reported in the NWC last fiscal year. A total of 1,276 cases related to domestic violence and women violence were reported from Bagmati Province.
