KATHMANDU, Sept 12: The Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee of the Federal Parliament, calling a meeting Wednesday, decided to direct stakeholders to maintain the quality of daily consumable goods and make supplies easier during the festive season.

The decision comes in the wake of upcoming Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals. After discussing with the Ministry of Home Affairs; Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport; Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development; Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies; and Ministry of Finance, it has asked the ministries to issue directives to concerned bodies under them.

It has asked Nepal government to determine the price of necessary consumable goods and make them easily available to the public during the festivals. The committee has asked the concerned authorities to prepare a mechanism for effective monitoring to control black marketing and price hike.

According to the decision of the committee, stakeholders should guarantee an easy supply of healthy buffalo, goat and chicken meat in the market. The government should establish fair price market across the country and make fish and meat products available in the shops. “The market monitoring bodies of the country should adopt effective ways to control the quality of products in the market,” according to the committee.

It has asked concerned authorities to manage sufficient vehicles for people traveling during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath festivals and determine a fixed rate for passengers traveling from Kathmandu, making bus tickets easily available to the people.

The committee has sought attempts to end black marketing in the transportation tickets and take instant action against those involved in black marketing. The committee highlighted the need to control the price of petroleum products (cooking gas, diesel, petrol, and kerosene) and also make the supply easy.

It has asked the bodies to regularly and effectively monitor market and punish those involved in black marketing and tampering with the weight and quality of the product. The committee has directed to control the price of sugar.

The meeting also decided on making pesticide residue-free fruits and vegetables available in the market after their examination and end adulteration in cooking oil, ghee, spices, among others.

Parliamentarian Bimal Prasad Shrivastav presided over the meeting.
