Paris’ Public Park Gets Nudist Zone

Paris’ Public Park Gets Nudist Zone

PARIS: City officials have designated part of a Paris public park, the Bois de Vincennes, as a clothing-optional zone. Those taking advantage of the experimental space are expected to abide by a displayed charter of “good behavior,” and exhibitionism and voyeurism are strictly prohibited. (Signs will let park users know which area is designated.)

According to Penelope Komites, a deputy mayor in charge of Paris’s parks, the nudist zone “is part of our open-minded vision for the use of Parisian public spaces.” The soccer field-sized area, located near the park’s bird reserve, will have signs alerting visitors to its purpose, and will be open from 8 am to 7:30 pm every day until October 15 as part of a temporary experiment.

Local nudists were reportedly thrilled with the city’s latest experiment. “It’s a true joy, it’s one more freedom for naturists,” said Julien Claude-Penegry, a member of the Paris Naturists Association, to French news agency AFP.

Claude-Penegry speculated that thousands of people could take advantage of the nudist zone, adding “It shows the city’s broad-mindedness and will help change people’s attitudes toward nudity, toward our values and our respect for nature.”

According to the Paris Naturists Association’s website, nudists are also free to swim naked in the Roger Le Gall public pool every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—and now they’ve got a place to go every day in between.

France is already home to miles and miles of nude beaches, as well as multiple resorts dedicated solely to vacationing sans clothing. But the open-minded nation isn’t the only place that welcomes nudists: San Francisco’s Baker Beach, Australia’s Maslin Beach, and Mallorca’s Es Trenc all have clothing-optional areas, while Wreck Beach in Vancouver is North America’s largest nude beach, clocking in at almost five miles long.
