KATHMANDU, Nov 17: Shankarapur Paragliding, Kathmandu’s first paragliding company, is planning to organize a paragliding tournament in the valley in near future.

Organizing a press meet in Kathmandu on Thursday, the company’s managing director Kushal Thapa said that the tournament is being planned to boost the sport in Kathmandu Valley.

Shankarapur Paragliding, which started test paragliding flights in Kathmandu’s eastern part three years ago, is gradually developing it into a full-fledged commercial venture.

“There has been development in infrastructure and production of capable paragliding pilots in Nepal over the past few years,” Thapa said: “With more investments, this sport can be commercialized as a glorious game.”

Shankarapur Paragliding is flying gliders from Jaharsingh Pauwa of Shankarapur Municipality, which is five kilometers of the historical town of Sankhu and seven kilometers from the tourist spot of Nagarkot. Jaharsingh Pauwa is 1,905 meters above sea level.

Paragliding in Nepal started from Pokhara. Different operators are now operating paragliding in other parts of the country such as Dharan, Bhairahawa, and Lalitpur’s Fulchoki.
