Paragliding Accuracy World Cup from Thursday

POKHARA/SYANGJA, Oct 30: The Paragliding Accuracy World Cup (PGAWC) is being held from Thursday in Syangja. The organizers are expecting that the tournament, which is being held for the first time in Nepal, will not only promote the courageous game, but will also help increase tourism in Nepal. 

The tournament will take place at Bheerkot and Waling municipalities in western Nepal. The players will participate by taking the flight from Swarek of Bheerkot-5 (1577m) and will land at Waling-11 (800m). Nearly 100 pilots have already registered their names for the tournament that will run for three days. Nepal had won a silver medal in its first participation at the 18th Asian Games which was held in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2 this year. Paragliding, which started commercially in Pokhara nearly 20 years ago, won the only medal for Nepal for the first time at the Asian Games in 20 years. 

There will be three categories in the tournament, according to Shailendra Rawat, general secretary of Nepal Paragliding and Hanggliding Association.  The three categories of the tournament are overall, women and team events. 

The winner, runner-up and the third-placed team of overall category will receive 1,000 euro (Rs 133,707), 750 euro (Rs 100,280) and 500 euro (Rs 66,853) respectively, while the winner, runner-up and the third-placed team of the team event will be rewarded with 1,500 euro (Rs 200,561), 1,200 euro (Rs 160,448) and 700 euro (Rs 93,595) respectively.
