PALPA, July 23: The Tribhuvan Multiple Campus in Palpa that was padlocked a week ago following a row over appointment of part-time teachers is yet to open. The All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) closed to the ruling Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) had padlocked the campus a week ago. [break]

Week-long dialogues to strike an agreement failed, inconveniencing students who are unsure when classes might resume. The students have expressed discontent over lack of efforts from concerned authorities to resolve the standoff at the western region’s best-known campus. [break}

ASSFSU has accused the campus chief of appointing eight part-time teachers on the basis of political bias. The union’s district chairman Gurans Atreya said the campus was padlocked as the campus chief appointed people who have full-time employment elsewhere, rather than appointing unemployed, competent teachers. He added that the union would not allow the campus to operate unless fresh intake is initiated.

Campus Chief Santosh Lal Shrestha said he has the authority to appoint part-time teachers. He added that the padlocking was uncalled for as the teachers have only been called to assist, and have not been given permanent status or a contract.

The issue has also divided the Free Students’ Union (FSU). FSU Chairman Haribol Bhattarai, who is from Nepal Students’ Union, has defended the appointment issuing a statement. On the other hand, others in the FSU representing the ANNFSU have issued another statement using the FSU’s letter pad opposing the appointment.
