KATHMANDU, Nov 26: The number of complaints related to cyber crime incidents has gradually been rising, with the development of information technology and increase in the use of the Internet.
According to the data from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police, over 6,500 complaints have been filed in the CIB since Mid-April this year (2024). Spokesperson for the CIB Superintendent of Police (SP) Deepak Raj Awasthi said that 6,702 complaints had been registered till November 19. The criminal activities through the internet in Nepal are increasing alarmingly.

According to the CIB, among the complaints filed in seven months, the highest number of complaints related to cybercrimes has been registered from social media platforms. A total of 3,949 complaints were filed related to Facebook, 1,282 complaints were related to Instagram, and 759 complaints from WhatsApp.
Similarly, 356 complaints from Tik Tok followed by 151 related to e-Sewa, 41 from email, 11 from Viber, one from X , 29 from YouTube, two from websites, seven from IMO and 114 other cyber crime related complaints have been registered in the CIB.
According to the data from the CIB, cyber crime complaints have doubled in the last fiscal year 2023/2024. In the fiscal year 2022/23, a total of 9,013 complaints were filed in CIB. In the last fiscal year 2023/24, this number has soared to 19,730.
Similarly, in the fiscal year 2020/21 and 2021/22, a total of 3,906 and 4,686 complaints respectively were registered in the CIB. Of those complaints, 76 cases were registered in 2020, followed by 132 cases in 2021 and 127 cases in 2022.
The complaints include incidents such as fraud, character assassination, breach of privacy, and the publication and broadcasting of pornographic material.
