KATHMANDU, May 17: More than 200 runners, including 155 from foreign countries, are set to take part in the 17th Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon 2019 to be held on May 29. A total of 30 countries are featuring in the marathon.
The marathon is organized to commemorate the first ascent of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953.

According to the organizers, the athletes will compete in three events-- full marathon (42.195 km), Everest extreme ultra (60 km) and half marathon (21 km).
The marathon will begin from the Everest Base Camp and conclude at Namche Bazaar.
Of the total participating foreign athletes, 59 are women. 125 are taking part in full marathon while Everest extreme ultra and half marathon will feature 17 and 12 athletes each excluding Nepali runners.
In Full Marathon, the top three runners of the open category will take a home cash prize of Rs 200,000, Rs 100,000 and Rs 75,000 respectively. Similarly, the top three runners in women’s category will earn Rs 100,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively. The top three placed players in foreigner category will get Rs 50,000, Rs 35,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.
Likewise, the top three athletes in Everest extreme ultra will get Rs 100,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000, respectively. The winner of half marathon will receive Rs 50,000, while the runner-up and third-placed runner will take home Rs 35,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.
