BIRENDRANAGAR, Nov 5: The temporary police post Babai, Surkhet located in Bheri Ganga Municipality-5 has seized a large amount of sugar that was being brought evading customs tax. The truck (Bhe 1 Kha 3041) carrying illegally brought sugar was taken under control when it was heading to Surkhet from Kailai.

The sugar imported from India by evading customs was found by the police during the check. The police took into custody Netra Bahadur Shahi, a 43-year-old resident of Kailali, Lamki Chuha Municipality-2, and the truck driver with 340 sacks (17 tons) of sugar, which had a vat bill, an online bill, but no customs documents.

Each bag contained 50 kg of sugar. Karnali Province Police Office Surkhet said that the recovered sugar has been handed over to Nepalganj Customs Office. It has been found that large amounts of illegal sugar was being supplied to the hilly districts of Karnali from Surkhet. Due to the lack of police action, illegal materials from Surkhet reach the hilly districts without any checkings.

Ramesh Rai, police inspector of Area Police Office Surkhet said that the Indian sugar worth Rs 1.7 million was seized and sent to the revenue office, Nepalgunj. Police Inspector Rai said, "The Revenue office will take action in a few days."

In the previous years, the police in Surkhet used to seize tobacco products illegally brought to Nepal evading tax. According to the Surkhet Police, the sugar was sent from the address of Khusi Traders (Motipur) Lamki, Kailali in the name of Shuwarna Traders, Surkhet.
