GORKHA, Sept 17: If the record of rape incidents maintained at the police stations for the last three years is anything to go by, the number of cases is on the rise with a girl being raped every month in the district.

Two complaints of rape incidents took place in the last two months while 12 such cases were recorded in 2074 BS.

A 10-year-old girl was brutally raped in Palungtar Municipality-8. Rape-accused Prasanta Roka, 19, is at large. Man Bahadur Pariyar, 38, was arrested on the charge of sexual violence against 16-year-old girl three weeks ago.

Similarly, 21-year-old Santa Bahadur Pariyar of Siranchok rural municipality-8 was caught for raping 26-year-old mentally weak woman. According to the victim’s family, Pariyar raped her in her own house.

Experts are clueless why the number of such heinous crimes is ever-increasing despite rise in the level of awareness, increasing trend of filing cases, and provision of stringent action against rapists.

In the year 2071 BS, a total of 11 rape-related cases (including both rape and attempted rape) had been registered at the police station. The number of rape cases rose to 16 in 2072, while in 2073 BS the number of cases climbed to 17. In the year 2074 BS, a total of 12 cases were registered at the police stations in Gorkha.

According to DSP Mahendra Nepal of District Police Office, most of the rape victims are under 16 years of age while the 80 percent of perpetrators are adults.

Most of the rape victims are from Dalit and Indigenous communities.
