The arrested said that former lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam had directed him to throw people in a brick kiln

KATHMANDU: Police on Saturday arrested one of the accused of a mass killing in Rautahat district in 2008.

Acting on a tip-off, the Province 2 Police arrested Mukti Shah, 55, a resident of Bara, from the border region in Bara for his alleged involvement in throwing nearly two dozen people in his brick kiln, confirmed a police officer. 

In 2008, a massive blast occurred in Rautahat district, leaving 14 dead and eight injured. It was later learnt that the dead and blast-injured were thrown into a nearby brick kiln to destroy evidence.

It was learnt that they [blast-injured and dead] were making bombs in a cowshed to create terror in the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections to secure Nepali Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam’s win.

“We arrested Shah yesterday evening. During the interrogation, the arrested said that former lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam had directed him to throw almost two dozen people in the brick kiln. He was one of the masons at the brick kiln,” Deputy Inspector General Dhiraj Pratap Singh, who is also the chief of Province 2 Police, told Republica Online over the phone.

He added that police are still interrogating the arrested for further investigation into the mass killing.  

In connection with the blast, Mohammad Aftab Alam, a former Nepali Congress lawmaker, is also in judicial custody for investigation into the mass murder of almost two dozen people.
