KATHMANDU, Sept 19: A team of police officials caught an individual in possession of a sum of Rs 1.6 million of unknown origin on Wednesday morning while he was trying to enter Nepal from India via the Gorgama border crossing in Siraha district.


Acting on a tip-off that an individual was travelling with suspicious amount of money to Nepal, a team of police personnel from the Kachanari Police Post in Siraha led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Birendra Shah arrested Lalit Das, 48, of Bariyarpatti Rural Municipality-2, Siraha with the sum of money at 9:25 am on Wednesday.

According to SI Shah, Das was riding a bike with registration number Sa 10 Pa 9853, with the wads of money wrapped in a shawl tied around his waist when he was stopped by the police for a check. “We had received a tip-off from our Indian counterpart that a suspicious person was trying to enter Nepal with a huge sum of money,” he told Republica.


According to the District Police Office, Siraha, Das was carrying 1000 bank notes of Rs 1000 denomination and 1200 bank notes of Rs 500 denomination. The police have seized the sum and the bike while Das has been kept in custody for further investigation. As of Wednesday evening, the source of the money has not been disclosed.
