KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel has said that a nuclear research center must be opened along with a big revolution in the science and technology sector for the prosperity of the country.

Speaking at a program organized by the ministry and International Atomic Energy Agency, Minister Pokharel said, “The goal of the country’s prosperity cannot be achieved without its development. So, opening a nuclear research center in Nepal is an urgent need.”

However, there is no law pertaining to the use of nuclear energy in agriculture, industries, national security and other aspects of society including the health sector. “We have to immediately put in place such laws and go ahead,” added Pokharel, who has been accused of not showing interest in bringing the Medical Education Act as per an agreement signed with Dr. Govinda KC, who has been fighting for the cause of the ordinary people.

Minister Pokharel also said that a nuclear energy bill will be tabled at the upcoming Winter Session of parliament. “We expect cooperation from all the political parties to endorse the bill,” he said.

Presenting a paper on the global use of atomic technology, IAEA Coordinator Shota Kamisata highlighted the establishment, objective and functions of the technology.

Science and Technology Secretary Krishna Raj BC said that a secure and peaceful use of the technology and radioactive materials can help achieve sustainable development.

Some lawmakers, who participated in the program, said that the technology can be applied to many sectors.

Nepal signed the atomic treaty in 1970 and became a member of IAEA in 2008.
