NRB Deputy Governor suspended after formation of inquiry committee

Inquiry committee to probe allegations against him and submit its report within a month​

KATHMANDU, Nov 4: Nepal Rastra Bank’s board meeting held this morning has formed an inquiry committee to probe into allegations made against the central bank’s deputy governor Shiba Raj Shrestha.

With the formation of the inquiry committee, deputy governor Shrestha has got suspended from his post. 

According to a board director, the NRB formed a three-member committee led by NRB’s board director Sri Ram Poudyal. Other two members are Dr Subodh Kumar Karna and Ramjee Regmi. 

The inquiry committee has been asked to investigate into allegations made against Shrestha within a month. 

Based on the report, the government will provide an opportunity for clarification for Shrestha and remove him if it found the clarification unsatisfactory. 

Shrestha has been alleged of his involvement in jeopardizing financial stability. The allegations range from involvement to threaten financial stability to acting dishonestly or with mala fide intention for personal gains to protect financial wrongdoers, according to a high-level source at the NRB. 

Shrestha’s five-year term is expiring in 16 months. A deputy governor is also considered a contender for the governor. The incumbent governor, Chiranjibi Nepal, is retiring after five months. 

NRB Deputy Governor Shrestha refuted all the allegations leveled against him. Talking with Republica, he said that the inquiry initiative is a ploy to remove him from the race of becoming NRB Governor.
