KATHMANDU, Sept 8: Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) of Kathmandu Metropolitan City has stated that the houses along the riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley will not be demolished under the new standards. In a social media post, he mentioned that for houses falling within the standards, the government should provide compensation before demolition.

He wrote on social media: "Under the new standards, no houses will be demolished, so please remain assured. If demolition is necessary, the government must provide compensation. If the government couldn't provide compensation for houses from 50 years ago, it won't be able to do so for you, either, nor will it be able to demolish them. We are here for you, so press the central government to change the rules. Once the rules are changed, we will issue new notices accordingly. Our only wish is that no one is deceived in the meantime."
The CPN-UML has demanded the cancellation of the rule that prohibits construction on an additional 20 meters of land beyond the designated riverbanks in Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The party has also requested a judicial review of the Supreme Court's decision related to this matter.
