KATHMANDU, April 7: Nepal Medical Council (NMC) on Thursday suspended the medical license of Dr Nutan Sharma, a gynecologist with Alka Hospital, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur.

“We issued the suspension letter to Dr Sharma yesterday, suspending her license for three months,” said Dr Dilip Sharma, registrar at the NMC. “She will be restricted from conducting medical practices in any health institutions for the period.”

On August 9, 2016, the council had decided to suspend Dr Sharma charging her with carrying out sex-selective abortions. The council's ethical committee reportedly took the decision after carrying out an investigation into a three-year old complaint.

After the NMC's decision, Dr Sharma had moved the Patan Appellate Court on August 14, 2016. The court then issued an interim order against the NMC decision on August 16. The court, however, gave the verdict in favor of the NMC decision to suspend Dr Sharma for her involvement in illegal practices. It's illegal to determine the sex of an unborn child in Nepal.

According to NMC, Dr Sharma is the second medical practitioner whose license has been suspended. In the past, the license of gynecologist Dr Jitendra Pariyar was suspended by the NMC in a similar case.
