NIST, Sahid Smarak into University Cup quarterfinals

KATHMANDU, April 6: NIST College and Sahid Smarak College advanced to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Sponsor University Cricket Cup T20 Tournament defeating Patan Multiple Campus and Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) respectively in the first round matches on Wednesday. 

Now, NIST will face Tribhuvan University (TU) and Sahid Smarak will compete with the winner between Cosmos College of Management and Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) in the last eight clashes of the tournament.  In the matches held at TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur, NIST thrashed Patan by 110 runs while Sahid Smarak registered six wickets victory over PAHS. 

In the first match of the day, NIST was invited to bat after losing the toss and made 182 runs in 20 overs losing five wickets. Player-of-the-match Bipin Acharya made highest 52 runs for NIST while his opening partner Sohan Yadav contributed 51 runs. Similarly, Bibek Rana Magar was another batsman to make big contribution for the winning side as he made 44 runs facing 22 balls. NIST also received 33 runs as extras from Patan. Ramesh Joshi, Shyam Thapa Magar, Dipendra Airee and Nirmal Luitel claimed one wicket each for Patan. 

In reply, Patan made just 72 runs losing all the wickets in 17.1 overs. Nirmal Luitel contributed 21 runs for Patan facing 31 balls while none other batsmen reached double digit figure. Openers Rajan Chaudhary and Dipendra Airee couldn’t make good start as they made four and six runs respectively before returning to the pavilion. NIST’s Pradip Pariyar took four wickets to limit Patan for the low total. Similarly, Sumit Jha bowled out three batsmen while Shankar Poudel, Bipin Acharya and Surya Lama claimed one wicket each. 

In the second match of the day, PAHS opted to bat first after winning the toss and made 116 runs in 18.1 over losing all wickets. Manish Yadav made highest 33 runs for PAHS while Nripesh Raj Giri contributed 29 runs. Openers Bibek KC and Ashutosh Shukla were sent to the pavilion for just one and two runs respectively. Sahid Smarak’s Dev Chalaune took three wickets while Tek Bahadur Salami and Lalit Pyakurel each bowled out two batsmen. Likewise, Khem Joshi claimed one wicket. 

In reply, Sahid Smarak met the target in 18.2 overs losing four wickets. Opener Nabin Sharma made highest 34 runs for Sahid Smarak while Sagar Lamsal contributed 24 runs remaining not out. Similarly, Biswash Shrestha made a run-a-ball 17. The wining side also received 29 runs as extra from PAHS. Nripesh Raj Giri claimed two wickets for PAHS while Ashok Kumar Yadav and Bibek Ghimire claimed one wicket each.
