KATHMANDU, July 13: Neema Gurung and Nisha Rawal have won silver medal in the international taekwondo championship held in South Korea.
Neema clinched silver in the 'fight' in the under-57 Kg weight category while Nisha bagged the silver medal towards the 73-Kg weight category of the championship held in Pohang of South Korea on Wednesday.
Neema who got a bye in the first game defeated Indonesian competitor 15-12 to reach the final. But she faced 22-10 defeat at the hands of an Indonesian player in the final. Similarly, Nisha conceded a6-4 defeat to Kazhakistani player in the final.
Hard work instead of education
Sangeeta Basyal won bronze medal in the semifinal of the championship under the 67-Kg weight group. Sangeeta faced defeat against her Indoinesian contender.
Bir Bahadur Mahara and Bhupen Shrestha were defeated by Koprean players in the male's group of the championship. But they got mixed success in the 'Category C'. Bir had to be content with a bronze in the 68-Kg weight group in the semifinal. He was defeted by Korean player.
Bhupen had reached the final in the 80-Kg group in the same category defeating his Korean contender 18-9. But he faced a n11-20 defeat to Malaysian player in the final.
National team instructor Deepak Bista said the team fights of the championship would be held on Friday. He belived that the Nepali players would perform well in the Asian Games to be held in Indonesia learning from the experience they have got in South Korea.
The Nepali national taekwondo team is currently undergoing special coaching by olympian duo Sangeena Baidya and Deepak Bishta in South Korea. The team will leave for Indonesia on August 15 to participate in the Asian Games. RSS
