KATHMANDU, Sept 18: A team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reached the residence of the suspended Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana after learning that he has been placed under house arrest.
After the news was published that Rana was under house arrest, the commission sent a team led by a joint secretary of the NHRC for monitoring.
As the news of Chief Justice Rana sending notice to the Supreme Court that he was going to return to work despite the pending impeachment proceedings against him, a large number of security personnel were also deployed to prevent him from entering the SC. It was said that Rana’s residence was also locked from the outside and police were deployed.
On February 13, 98 MPs filed an impeachment motion against Rana. The term of the House of Representatives has ended and the new election program has started today. The term of the House of Representatives ended late on Saturday night.
NHRC urges govt to end torture in custody and prisons
Sub-section 960 of Article 101 of the Constitution and Sub-rule 9 of Rule 161 of the House of Representatives Rules 2075 provide that the Chief Justice cannot perform his duties until such proceedings are concluded after the commencement of impeachment proceedings.
