KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The state-run Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) is planning to bring 2,000 goats and mountain goats from various parts of the country to the capital for the Dashain festival.

The Corporation has set aside Rs 34.9 million to purchase goats and mountain goats from various parts of the country and sell them in Kathmandu.

NFC spokesman Shankar Sapkota informed that they are planning to purchase mountain goats from Mustang and goats from Makawanpur and Dang districts. Officials from the corporation will be sent to the districts concerned soon to purchase the goats, according to Sapkota.

“Once the animals are brought to Kathmandu, we will start selling them from our offices in Kathmandu from Ghatasthapana, the first day of the Dashain festival, informed Sapkota. Around 1,000 mountain goats will be brought from Mustang whereas the remaining goats will be brought from Dang and Makawanpur districts.

The corporation is buying fewer goats for this Dashain as compared to last year.

Last year, the NFC had brought 2,500 goats in total. A total of Rs 38.9 million was allocated for last years’ Dashain to buy goats from Dang, Siraha and Makawanpur districts.

NFC officials said they are buying fewer goats this year due to funds and manpower crunch.

As of now, the NFC has not fixed the retail price for the goats and mountain goats. The spokesman said they will fix the price of the goats after adding transport and other costs.

People scramble to buy goats and mountain goats from NFC depots because of the government subsidy.
