KATHMANDU, Sept 11: A two-day news writing workshop aimed at enhancing journalism students' reporting skills has commenced at St. Xavier’s College in collaboration with UNESCO Nepal from Wednesday.

The fourth edition of the workshop features 27 participants from St. Xavier’s and various government and community colleges. It marks the first collaboration between UNESCO's Kathmandu office and the college.

"Apart from the lecture based learning method, we have been practicing project- based pedagogy to enhance the quality of education that we are delivering. This workshop also comes in line with our determination to provide quality education with effect. I believe that this workshop provides students with practical skills that will be invaluable in their journalistic career,” said Chun Bahadur Gurung, Faculty lead and workshop coordinator.

This workshop covers a wide range of topics from pitching story ideas to drafting compelling and impactful stories, aimed at positively impacting and encouraging students pursuing journalism and enhancing the quality of journalism in Nepal.

The program covers topics such as pitching story ideas, crafting impactful stories, and ethical reporting. Sessions are led by journalists and communication experts, including Bhadra Sharma from The New York Times, writer and editor Louisa Kamal, and senior communication specialist Naresh Newar.

Participants include 16 students from St. Xavier’s and 10 from community colleges in Kathmandu, selected from an open call in late August.

“Non-credit courses like this workshop are crucial in enhancing the teaching-learning process. They offer students hands-on experience and valuable insights, helping them become not only skilled journalists but also thoughtful communicators. Writing is the core of storytelling, and this workshop aims to develop both," Saluja Chand, acting Principal of St. Xavier’s highlighted addressing the inauguration session.

The workshop includes students from Namuna Machhindra Campus, Madan Bhandari Memorial College, Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus, and Nepal Commerce Campus.
