Never say never

Not only kids but adults too love, ‘Motu Patlu’— an Indian animated television series. It was premiered on 16 October 2012 that garnered quick success within short period of its broadcast, due to jocular content.

Inspired from the cartoon series, two Nepali girls—Aarati Shrestha (21-year-old) and Bunu Tamang (20-year-old) — named their dancing crew as ‘Motu Patlu’.

The duo were practicing in same dancing institution, Nepal Hip Hop Foundation, Thahity, Kathmandu, where they came together for a dance battle — Hip Hop international Nepal 2016 at Academy Hall, Kathmandu.

“We’re in same dancing institution. We came together for the dancing battle--Hip Hop International Nepal but we didn’t have a name for our group yet,” shared Bunu.

About the reason for the name Bunu added, “I was slightly over sized and Aarati was under weight. And our physical features and love for the animated series inspired us to name our crew Motu Patlu.”

During the dance battle they could not win the trophy; however they won each other’s trust and support to continue with their journey as hip-hop dancers. And they officially named the crew Motu Patlu.

Since then, they have been participating in several dance competitions. In 2018, the crew participated in Word Dancing League, held in Pokhara. Here too, they could only reach up to the final and had to satisfy being second in the competition.

To enhance their dancing skills, the crew has created a YouTube Channel that garnered around 7,000 subscribers.  About the channel Aarati shared, “There aren’t many videos in our YouTube channel as we believe in quality content. And from pre production to post production, we always give our best.”

She added, “However, it is a daunting task to produce a video for the channel. We hardly get any financial support from our parents. So, we invest for it from our own pocket and it is really tough. However, we have been managing with the income from our part time jobs.”

In addition, it takes around Rs 20, 000 to produce a quality video as per Aarti and this duo are up to overcome any challenge that comes in between their dancing career and who are willing to raise their bar as hip-hop dancers.
