Nepal's second int'l airport reopens two years later, but local euphoria is not the same

While the resumption of international flights after a hiatus of more than two years signals hope for the future of the Gautam Buddha International Airport -- Nepal’s second international airport – several operational, logistical and policy hurdles must be addressed to unlock its full potential.

KATHMANDU, Nov 28: There was euphoria among local businesspersons, hoteliers and ordinary public in Bhairahawa when the Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA) was inaugurated amid a special ceremony on May 16, 2022. The GBIA, Nepal's second international airport, saw the first ever flights by the Kuwait-based Jazeera Air and Nepal’s national flag-carrier, Nepal Airlines. The inaugural flights gave confidence to the investors, who had started pouring in investment in infrastructures like hotels after the start of its construction, to pump in further investment.
