KATHMANDU, Jan 30: The main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has said it has not any formal information regarding the decision of the Council of Ministers to keep the hospitals named after its two former presidents the late Girija Prasad Koirala and the late Sushil Koirala under the federal government. 

Addressing a news conference organized at the party’s central office in Sanepa today, Party spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma said that the government correcting its mistake (regarding the two hospitals) has appeared in the media but the party has not been formally informed about this. 

The Nepali Congress had obstructed the proceedings in the Federal Parliament before this charging the government of pushing these two hospitals named after its two leaders to the brink of dissolution. 

Party spokesperson Sharma also said the Nepali Congress has planned for nation-wide protest programs on February February 4 to protest against some of the activities of the government and the parliament. “Necessary preparations have been started in all districts for the protest programme,” he added. 

He said the incident that took place in the parliament on January 25, the government’s insensitive attitude towards the hunger strike launched by Dr Govinda KC, the ill attempt of the government to decimate the hospitals named after the Koirala duo, convening of the meeting of the Constitutional Council without the presence of the leader of the main opposition party, Sher Bahadur Deuba and taking some important decisions would be made the main issues of the protest programme. 

The protest demonstrations would be centred on issues as the side concerned becoming unsuccessful in curbing heinous crimes as violence, murder and rape which have been increasing throughout the country; failure to book the culprit (s) behind the murder of Nirmala Panta, a girl from Kanchanpur, even after six months since her rape and murder; inflation and corruption; and the local issues in the district,” the NC spokesperson said. 

‘Wide-body plane purchase should be probed’ 

The party spokesman stated that the meeting of the party’s central working committee has included ‘corruption’ as one of the issues of the protest demonstrations and formally noted in the minutae as well as made this public. He made it clear that the party has been raising voice in the parliament and in public that the scam of billions of rupees in the purchase of the wide-body aircraft should be seriously investigated. 

According to him, the party would exert more pressure on this matter by means of the protest programme. 
Wondering what was behind the decision of giving the Budhi Gandaki Multi-purpose Hydroelectricity Project to a foreign company without calling for competitive bidding, he said the issue of the delay in the construction of the Nijgadh international airport project would also be among the issues to be protested. 
Likewise, spokesperson Sharma said the issue of failure to nab the main culprits behind the smuggling of 33 kilogrammes gold, the purchase of 11 cars by the Province 5 government secretariat at inflated cost would also be the issues of protest. 

He added that the serious attention of the Nepali Congress has been drawn to the news of 12 Nepali youths being held captive in Libya. He said the party has urged the government to rescue these youths held captive and bring them back home and to take action against the culprits in this connection.
